Building A Grange - The 6880 Betton Grange Project
None of the GWR Grange class 4-6-0 locomotives survived into the preservation era and this a class much missed by enthusiasts and crews alike. But now there is a project to build a new one! The project has started at Llangollen by a team who thought the class is missing in the collection of GWR classes in preservation. Some parts still existed in the form of a boiler and wheels; the boiler from Hall 7927 and the wheels from a class 4300. Construction of the frames is almost complete now.
All of this is seen in the video but most of it is archive film of the class in service in the 1960s and also archive film showing the development of Collett’s design from the Saint class through the 4300s, Manors and Halls. At least 29 different Granges are seen that can be identified, some of them twice. Railtours with them are seen with especially good coverage of the final tour with a Grange from Swansea to Fishguard and Milford Haven.
